McKinsey Health Institute - Ageing with Purpose: Why Meaningful Engagement with Society Matters
This report produced by the McKinsey Health Institute examines how ageing affects both individuals and society. It notes that older people are often seen as a drain on a country's resources, and that fails to recognise the social and financial benefits older adults add to society. Increasing the participation of older adults in wider society benefits everyone: not only does it improve the social and mental health of older adults, it also boosts GDP, offers intergenerational connections for younger people and helps all members of society understand the important role older adults play in all areas of life. The report confirms that older adults are both happier and healthier when they feel able to interact more in wider society. Having a purpose in life and meaningful connections with others are among the most important factors that improve the health of older adults. The report notes that greater societal participation of older adults benefits everyone: it can improve the social and mental health of older adults, boost GDP, and offer intergenerational connections for younger members of society.
